Happy Equinox! We wish you well this Autumn season!
We wanted to say thanks for giving us a break last week so that we could celebrate the harvest season and raise funds for our Youth Programs at FortWhyte Farms at the 3rd Annual Harvest Supper Fundraiser! To everyone who came, we are so thankful for your support and commitment to us. For those of you who couldn’t make it, check out our Harvest Supper recap.
This is the time of year that wildlife celebrate in the harvest, too Pest pressures from the migrating geese are more evident as they nibble garden greens and pull carrots from the ground. Beets are gnawed by voles, and deer come to snack on squash, cucumber and zucchini. And the tomatoes were hit by late blight a few weeks back. But despite all of that, there is still a lot comin’ outta the garden for your shares, including:
- napa cabbage
- yellow sweet banana and green bell peppers
- beautiful swiss chard
- amazing kale
- free choice green tomatoes – take as many as you want!
There are lots of ways to enjoy the bounty this week, here’s a few ideas: fermented kimchi, potato leek soup (although the purple potatoes, when cooked, go grey), green tomato salsa, borscht, zucchini chocolate cake, roasted root veggies with fresh herbs…. your creativity is the limit. Enjoy!
